Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has sworn in the 21 newly elected local government council chairmen elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging them to execute projects that directly impact the lives of the people.
The Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) conducted the local government elections in June and declared all the PDP candidates winners in the 21 local government areas.
Governor Fintiri, while addressing the newly elected chairmen at the Government House Banquet Hall in Yola on Wednesday, said his administration had, over the past seven years, provided a conducive atmosphere for political development across the state.
He urged the chairmen to remain in their respective councils and work for the development of their communities, while carrying along traditional rulers, development area administrators and other stakeholders to ensure inclusive decision-making.
“As chairmen of councils, you are the government at the grassroots. You are in a vantage position to create the right image for government policies, which are pro-poor and aimed at improving the lives of our rural dwellers. You must be at the forefront of stimulating development in your respective areas,” he said.
“You must let the people feel the impact of governance by making yourselves available, listening to their concerns and solving problems at that level. Governance is best appreciated when its impact is felt at the grassroots.”
Fintiri further urged the chairmen to remain accessible to their constituents.
“You must be symbols of government in your respective duty posts. Engage the people regularly and dispel any real or perceived misconceptions that may exist between the government and the governed.
“As leaders of the tier of government closest to the people, your doors must remain open, and your people should have access to you at all times. I must emphasise that the era of absenteeism in your respective local governments is over.
“Under no circumstances should your people look for you and fail to find you. You were not elected to work in Yola. Except on official assignments, I do not expect to see you here frequently.
“I also caution you to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and prudent management of public funds,” the governor said.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, the Chairman of Yola North Local Government Area, Ibrahim Jibrin Jimeta, thanked Governor Fintiri for providing what he described as an enabling environment for the conduct of a free and fair election.
Jimeta attributed their victory to the governor’s developmental strides in human capital and infrastructure across the state’s 21 local government areas.
