Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said the commission’s immediate priority is the conduct of the forthcoming Osun State governorship election and preparations for subsequent nationwide elections.
Amupitan stated this on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving a delegation of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) resident in Plateau State, who paid him a congratulatory visit following his appointment as INEC chairman.
The delegation, led by Pius Akubo (SAN), described Amupitan’s appointment as a landmark for the North-Central region and Nigeria’s democratic process.
Presenting a congratulatory card on behalf of the group, Akubo prayed for God’s guidance and wisdom for the INEC chairman as he leads the country’s electoral management body.
Responding, Amupitan thanked the delegation for the visit, describing members of the Plateau SANs as family and recalling his longstanding professional ties with the legal community in the state.
He also paid tribute to late senior advocates from Plateau State, saying their deaths were a great loss to the legal profession.
The INEC chairman appealed to Nigerians, particularly members of the legal profession, to continue supporting and praying for the commission as it discharges its constitutional responsibilities.
He also commended the National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, directors and technical aides for their commitment, describing them as the “generals” behind the commission’s recent successes.
Amupitan reiterated that while the commission remained committed to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process, its immediate focus was the successful conduct of the Osun governorship election and preparations for future nationwide electoral activities.
