Kertajati Airport to continue Umrah flights while amid MRO development

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation has stated that Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka District, West Java, will continue serving Hajj and Umrah flights while also being developed as a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility.

"Regarding Kertajati, it will indeed be developed as an MRO facility, but it will continue to serve Hajj and Umrah flights," Director General of Air Transportation Lukman said here on Thursday.

Kertajati International Airport has been serving Hajj and Umrah flights since 2023.

The airport is Indonesia's second-largest after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with an annual passenger terminal capacity of 5.6 million.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said PT Dirgantara Indonesia and PT Bandarudara Internasional Jawa Barat collaborate to develop the Kertajati area into an aerospace industry hub.

According to him, one of the challenges the government is addressing is increasing flight activity at Kertajati Airport, including expanding services for Hajj and Umrah flights.

At the same time, the government is seeking to develop an aerospace industrial zone, or industrial park, in the area.

Yudhoyono said Bandung, the West Java's capital city, is becoming increasingly densely populated, with growing competition for land use, making a larger development area necessary. In this regard, Kertajati is considered an ideal location.

He explained that Kertajati's location in Majalengka District, within the Cirebon-Patimban-Kertajati (Rebana) area, is strategically connected to western Indonesia, providing direct access to Jakarta as well as the industrial areas of Bekasi, Karawang, and Purwakarta.

The area is also connected to Patimban Port, while to the east it provides access to Cirebon and extends to Central Java, including Semarang. To the south, Kertajati is expected to serve as a feeder airport for flights to several districts and cities in southern West Java and Central Java.
