Almost 40% of elementary-school pupils not up to scratch in maths

Results of Invalsi tests show big rise in percentage without basic numeracy

The proportion of Italian

elementary-school pupils who have at least the basic level

required for their age in mathematics is just over 60%, meaning

that almost one in four are not up to scratch, according to the

results of the latest nationwide 'Invalsi' tests.

The results regarded tests done on children in the second and

fourth year of elementary school and showed a drop of three

percentage points with respect to the previous year in the

proportion of pupils who make the grade and a drop of

eight-to-10 percentage points on the pre-COVID period in 2019,

when the percentage was over 70%.

The 'Invalsi' tests measuring numeracy and literacy are not used

to grade pupils but are done anonymously to to evaluate how

schools and the system itself is performing.
