A 33-year-old worker was electrocuted
while working on a fiber optic installation near Naples in
Italy's latest workplace death Thursday.
The Moroccan man, who died at Montesano Salentino, was employed
by a Naples-based company specializing in fiber optic
installation.
According to reports, the electrocution struck him while he was
working on a public electricity pole on a ladder. Carabinieri,
Spesal inspectors, and the mayor of Montesano, Giuseppe Maglie,
were on the scene.
Workplace deaths are in fact a major problem in Italy and
Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has said boosting health and
safety is a major priority.
In November the cabinet launched a digital badge for contractors
and sub-contractors on construction sites, aimed at improving
safety.
Trade unions say an average of three workers a day die in
workplace accidents in Italy.
