The parties of Premier Giorgia
Meloni's ruling coalition on Thursday started a campaign for the
release of Mario Roggero, a jeweler whose prison term of 14
years and nine months for killing two robbers and wounding a
third after a heist at his shop in 2021 was upheld by the
supreme court on Wednesday, making the verdict definitive.
The parliamentary whips of the ruling majority's parties
launched a petition calling on the justice ministry to request a
presidential pardon for Roggero.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, a senior member of Meloni's
right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, said via X that "every
possibility should be explored" to enable Roggero to return
home, arguing the verdict was "unjust, incomprehensible, and
difficult to accept".
