Kardashians' Grandma MJ Turns 91—and Celebrates With a Party Fit For a Queen

The Kardashian family is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Kris Jenner’s mom Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon died July 16, The Kardashians star confirmed on social media. She was 91.

“There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye,” Kris wrote in her post, alongside a photo of her mom. “My mom was the heart of our family.”

Indeed, the 70-year-old emphasized that MJ taught her “everything” she needed to know about caring for her and late Robert Kardashian’s kids Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Rob Kardashian and Khloe Kardashian, as well as Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner—whom she shares with ex Caitlyn Jenner.

“To love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted,” Kris detailed. “She taught us that family is everything. She showed us how to love unconditionally and how to find joy in the little moments.”

Despite her mom’s death, Kris emphasized that her family will continue to be shaped by MJ’s legacy.

“Our hearts are broken, but we find comfort knowing that love like yours never truly leaves us,” she continued. “Your love will live on in our family, in our traditions, in every moment we are together, and in every life you touched. When I look at my kids and my grandkids, I will forever see pieces of you in all of us.”

Meanwhile, Kris’ kids have exemplified their close bond with MJ—who shared Kris as well as her late sister Karen Houghton with late ex Robert True "Bob" Houghton—over the years.

In a post celebrating her grandmother’s 91st birthday last July, Kylie lovingly referred to her as “the queeeeen.”

Kim, meanwhile, shared several glimpses into her bond with the family’s matriarch, writing in a post last March, “No one cuter than my grandma MJ.”

“I don’t know what I would do without you grandma,” the SKIMS founder wrote in another post celebrating MJ’s 90th birthday in 2024. “We have the best memories that [are] burnt into my soul forever! From staying with you in the summers growing up and u taking us to the beach to our long Sunday talks and tea sessions.”

As Kim put it, “You really have been the best example of strength and independence.”
