Jakarta (ANTARA) - Special Presidential Envoy for Energy and Climate Hashim Djojohadikusumo hailed the establishment of a credible carbon trading ecosystem in Indonesia as a crucial breakthrough for the nation’s climate goals and transition to green economy.
"This is a breakthrough - a breakthrough that I have personally experienced and witnessed," Hashim said here on Thursday (July 16).
According to him, the national carbon trading ecosystem is now fully operational, backed by key strategic instrument, including the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK) and approval from the Ministry of Forestry for the issuance of carbon units under the Non-Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificate (Non-SPE-GRK) scheme.
Hashim noted that the international community has been waiting for this level of regulatory and infrastructural readiness since the landmark Paris Agreement (COP21) in 2015.
"This (SRUK) has been awaited for 11 years, since the birth of the Paris Agreement in 2015," he said, attributing the quick rollout to seamless collaboration across various ministries, state institutions and private stakeholders.
The rapid implementation of the policy has already garnered international praise, he added.
”All parties, all actors, praise our government's achievements. We can now enter a new chapter of carbon trading," Hashim stated.
Beyond emissions reductions, Hashim explained that a transparent and credible carbon market will directly fund and accelerate Indonesia's broader green energy transition.
Specifically, carbon revenues are expected to support the government's ambitious target to build 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar power plant (PLTS) capacity over the next decade.
The massive solar expansion is part of a strategic push to eliminate fossil fuel dependence and achieve 100 percent renewable electricity.
"I think with this, we can later enjoy the programs that were previously announced, (such as) the solar power plant that will soon begin to reach 100 GW, and will be followed by other green programs," Hashim concluded.
