Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has strengthened its global artificial intelligence (AI) role by becoming one of the 29 founding members of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO), after signing the declaration in Shanghai on Thursday (July 16).
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Angga Raka Prabowo, in a statement received here on Friday, said Indonesia's participation has marked a strategic milestone in aligning national AI governance with international best practices while fostering cross-border collaboration to develop an inclusive and responsible AI ecosystem.
According to him, Indonesia's status as a founding member of WAICO reinforces the country's role in shaping global AI governance while expanding international cooperation to build a responsible AI ecosystem.
WAICO is an independent, non-profit intergovernmental organization established under the framework of the United Nations (UN).
The organization was formed to promote artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and encourage the application of AI for the benefit of people around the world.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres attended the establishment of WAICO as a show of support for the initiative.
Indonesia's participation in WAICO is expected to significantly support the government's efforts to make the digital economy one of the drivers of national economic growth while accelerating transformation and investment in high value-added sectors.
Deputy Minister Angga accompanied Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, who led the Indonesian delegation.
As part of the WAICO events in Shanghai, Angga was scheduled to attend the informal preparatory session on the establishment of WAICO and several bilateral meetings on Friday local time.
He was accompanied by Director of Artificial Intelligence and New Technology Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs Aju Widya Sari and the Minister Counsellor of the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing.
