A worker was killed in Friuli Friday
after being hit while working on railway tracks in the latest in
a long spate of accidental workplace deaths in Italy.
The 43-year-old man, a resident of Latisana (Udine), died this
early afternoon in an accident at work that occurred along the
railway tracks near the San Giorgio di Nogaro station.
The alarm was raised around 1:00 PM.
According to a reconstruction of events—ANSA has learned from
the Udine police headquarters—the man, a Tunisian citizen,
employed by an external company carrying out work along the
Venice-Trieste line, apparently got off a vehicle only to trip
and end up under another train, in transit and without
passengers, coming from the opposite direction.
The impact was fatal.
The railway police and forensic team are investigating.
Workplace deaths are in fact a major problem in Italy and
Premier Giorgia Meloni's government has said boosting health and
safety is a major priority.
In November the cabinet launched a digital badge for contractors
and sub-contractors on construction sites, aimed at improving
safety.
Trade unions say an average of three workers a day die in
workplace accidents in Italy.
