Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka reinforced the government's commitment to improving learning environments by visiting Public Elementary School (SDN) 016 Serusa Parit Aman in Rokan Hilir District, Riau.
The visit comes as the government targets the revitalization of 71,744 schools across Indonesia in 2026.
According to a statement from the Vice Presidential Secretariat on Saturday, Gibran visited the school on Friday after a teacher, Desi Pradipta, appealed for government assistance online.
“I put a comment on the vice president’s Instagram account, inviting him to SDN 016 Serusa. Thank God, he responded to the request and came here to our school today,” Desi said.
She expressed hope that Gibran's visit would pave the way for school renovations, allowing students to study in a more comfortable environment.
“Hopefully, this school will achieve progress following the visit of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming. Teachers and students here are hoping for this school to be repaired,” she remarked.
The vice president acknowledged the school’s need for government intervention and proceeded to hold an interactive session with parents and students to heed their aspirations.
“This is a very old school; many of its graduates have made contributions to the village and the state,” said Muhari Siregar, a parent of second and sixth-grade pupils, during the dialogue.
According to him, Gibran assured parents of efforts to drive a rehabilitation project for the school to handle the roof, ceilings, walls, and doors currently in disrepair.
Apart from school matters, the vice president invited parents to share challenges and difficulties they face as farmers and fishers.
During the discussion, he heard concerns over limited access to diesel fuel for fishing vessels and subsidized fertilizer for farmland and pledged follow-up measures.
Gibran has made similar visits to schools in various regions to review educational services and infrastructure
At an elementary school in Ende District, East Nusa Tenggara, on June 18, he highlighted the government's nationwide school revitalization program, with priority given to facilities in disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost regions.
