Ride-hailing in Kathmandu on Uber
You can hail a ride on Uber for various locations in Kathmandu. To try it myself, I did a bit of research, and I chose to hail a ride at New Baneshwor for Kalanki. It then gave me available options. It categorized the possible rides as Affordable compact rides and longer wait for the other two. They are generic terms for vehicles based on their availability and type of vehicle.
But do remember that Uber Go is the most affordable ride option made available on the app for passengers. It is the taxi version of the Uber ride while others are Bike and Comfort, a premium option. So, the three options in Uber ride available in Kathmandu are:
Uber Bike
Uber Go (Taxi)
Uber Comfort (Premium ride)
It’s been said that the company had been exploring prospects for its entry into the Nepali ride-hailing market prior to its soft launch.

About the Uber app interface
The registration process on Uber is surprisingly easy, just a matter of a few taps. And the app’s interface is very user-friendly. There are four tabs at the bottom, which give options for Home, Services, Activity, and Account.
Home: On the top of this tab, you can enter the location where you need to go to look for available rides. This tab also gives you updates from the company. Here, you can check out the FAQs of the company and also take a tour to learn more.
Services: Ride option is also available from here. I love how the app shows your current location, and you need to enter the Where to place to book your ride. The app also lets you request a ride for later, as per your convenience.
Activity: It shows your recent activities, such as rides, etc.
Account: You can tap on the photo to upload your photo, update your personal details, use the authenticator app, passkeys to enhance your security, and add a recovery phone number to access your account. In this very tab, you can see the Wallet option, which shows how much Uber Cash you have. Already, it shows the amount in Nepali currency with the NPR abbreviation. It shows that there are vouchers, promo codes, in-store offers, and other cool and exciting stuff on the app.

Market competition for Uber
As Uber launches in Nepal, the ride-sharing landscape takes a major shape. As of now, there are about 30 ride-sharing platforms in Nepal. Some of them are foreign, while some are domestically headed. To name a few, inDrive, Pathao, and Yango have been more popular than the others. They serve ridesharing, courier, and inter-city trips. Though there are more platforms, these have been household names.
But Uber’s launch will now redefine the ride-hailing sector. It brings its service along with its practices and standards for urban mobility, which may give a toe-to-toe competition to the existing players. It will practically bring a new experience for users. The platform’s entry also helps generate employment opportunities for many. The name itself has been highly popular in pop culture and social media. This could also propel its popularity further.
Uber is headquartered in San Fransico. It has over 220 million monthly active customers with over 10 million active drivers and couriers across 70 countries and 15,000 cities.
But while excitement is there, some are also weighing on it that the industry is already saturated with almost 3 dozen platforms. Therefore, the launch of Uber could make life difficult for some, while competition will also get intense. But time will tell how it will unfold.
