
A 28-year-old woman died and a 32-year-old man was seriously injured after they were struck by a car while walking on a pavement in Albufeira during the early hours of Saturday morning.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Rua dos Bombeiros Voluntários, directly opposite the Albufeira fire station. According to Correio da Manhã, the couple were walking along the pavement when a vehicle left the roadway and hit them, throwing both victims into nearby bushes.
Firefighters on duty reportedly heard the impact and rushed to the scene within seconds. Despite immediate emergency assistance, the woman, a Cape Verdean national, suffered cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured man was transported to hospital in a serious condition.
Correio da Manhã reports that the driver initially attempted to leave the scene but was prevented from doing so by members of the Albufeira fire brigade until officers from the GNR arrived. The driver has since been named as a formal suspect in the investigation.
The alert was raised at 00:02, triggering a major emergency response involving firefighters, INEM paramedics, the Portuguese Red Cross and the GNR. A medical helicopter was also mobilised but was ultimately stood down before landing.
Authorities carried out forensic examinations at the scene and are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. According to Correio da Manhã, a local resident is believed to have witnessed the incident and may provide key testimony as investigators seek to establish exactly what happened.
