The latest round of local elections in
Italy which saw the centre left prevail over the centre right by
10 to six in provincial capitals have sent a signal to the
government that there is an alternative, the centre-left
Democratic Party (PD) said after the results came in Monday.
"The result of the local elections confirms the strength and
roots of the centre left in Italian cities," said Chiara Braga
and Francesco Boccia, Democratic Party group leaders in the
Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) and the Senate, and Nicola
Zingaretti, Head of the Democratic Party delegation to the
European Parliament.
"With the first round (included), the final result in the
provincial capitals was 10 to 6 for the centre left.
"This is a significant result that rewards the work of local
administrators and the credibility of projects built around the
concrete needs of communities.
"In a complex period for the country, with a government that
denies the evidence, citizens continue to recognize the
center-left as a serious, competent, and people-friendly
proposal.
"Where broad, united, and credible coalitions are built, capable
of putting public services, jobs, sustainability, and social
cohesion at the center, we are competitive.
"This is an important indication for the future: the center-left
represents a solid alternative to the right-wing government."
