Kieffer Alas shows up at PNP-CIDG HQ amid Ateneo drowning probe

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball player Kieffer Alas on Thursday showed up at the headquarters of the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP–CIDG) which is probing into the death of his teammates Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

Baterbonia and Adili drowned during a training activity in a beach resort in Dipaculao, Aurora, earlier this month.

Alas and teammate Sam Reyes appeared on a podcast with journalist Pia Hontiveros aired last Tuesday, where they recounted their near-death experience during the Aurora incident.

They denied that the activity in Dipaculao was an initiation rite.

At least seven other players were seen entering the CIDG with Alas around 9 a.m. on Thursday.

None gave statements to the media.

Chanced upon by reporters outside the CIDG later on Thursday morning, the unit’s director, Police Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II, said their investigators have yet to release an update regarding the investigation.

On Wednesday, Morico bared that at least 48 individuals have been subpoenaed in connection with the investigation into Baterbonia and Adili’s deaths, including their teammates, former Ateneo Blue Eagles players, their coaching staff, university officials, and MVP Sports Foundation.

The CIDG chief also previously maintained that the incident was not an accident. /gsg
