CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 57-year-old man from Pinamungajan town, Cebu, died after he was struck by a van while crossing a national highway in the City of Naga late Tuesday night, June 16.
Police said the incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. and was reported to authorities about an hour later, shortly after midnight on Wednesday, June 17.
The victim was identified as Jesusito Fabre Zabate, 57, single, and a resident of Purok Caimito in Barangay Guimbawian, Pinamungajan.
Victim reportedly known to ‘wander’
In an interview on Thursday, June 18, Police Lieutenant Colonel Dexter Calacar, chief of the City of Naga Police Station, said the victim rarely stayed at home and would often roam from place to place.
Calacar said that this information relayed by the victim’s sibling indicated that Zabate had previously figured in incidents where he would allegedly place himself in the path of moving vehicles.
The police chief added that the victim’s father is already 84 years old, a circumstance that prompted his siblings to take charge of the funeral arrangements.
As of Thursday, Zabate’s remains had been brought to their home in Pinamungajan.

According to the initial investigation of City of Naga Police Station, a Nissan Urvan driven by 58-year-old Melbert Woo Aquino of Barangay Pardo, Cebu City, was traveling northbound toward Cebu City when the victim suddenly crossed the national highway in Barangay Tinaan and was accidentally struck.
Calacar said Aquino, a mechanic, was returning to Cebu City from Moalboal when the incident happened.
The victim sustained serious injuries and was immediately brought to the City of Naga Infirmary Hospital for emergency treatment.
However, despite medical intervention, he was later declared dead by the attending physician.
