RI elected to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee 2026-2030

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for the period of 2026-2030.

In a press release received here on Thursday, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said Indonesia won the vote in Paris during the 11th General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the UNESCO Headquarters.

Indonesia successfully secured its seat following a highly competitive election within Group IV (Asia-Pacific), where four countries were elected out of six candidates. In addition to Indonesia, the countries elected from Group IV were Japan, Philippines, and Cambodia.

Indonesian Ambassador to France and Permanent Delegate of Indonesia to UNESCO, Mohamad Oemar, said the achievement represents a great responsibility that Indonesia will undertake with full dedication.

He emphasised throughout the 2026-2030 period, Indonesia remains committed in contributing to global policymaking on cultural safeguarding, promoting a more inclusive implementation of the 2003 Convention, and prioritising the strengthening of local communities’ capacities.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, I Gusti Agung Ketut Satrya Wibawa, underlined that Indonesia would optimise its strategic position on the Committee to advance the interests of developing countries in the safeguarding of cultural heritage.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is an exclusive body consisted of 24 members elected from among the 185 States Parties to the 2003 UNESCO Convention.

The Committee is entrusted with key responsibilities, including evaluating and inscribing elements on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists and formulating policy guidance for the safeguarding of cultural heritage worldwide.

Through its membership in the Committee, Indonesia stands ready to ensure that cultural heritage continues to be safeguarded and serves as an important pillar in promoting solidarity, peace, and sustainable development.

The Foreign Ministry stated this achievement was made possible through the intensive lobbying and diplomatic efforts from the Indonesia's Delegation, as well as the strong support of many friendly countries.

The confidence placed in Indonesia by the international community stands as a testament to the country's steadfast commitment to the sustainable safeguarding of culture.
