
Carmelo Abela has officially been elected Speaker of the House as Malta’s Parliament reconvened for the first sitting of the new legislature following the 2026 general election.
Abela succeeds Anġlu Farrugia, who served as Speaker throughout the previous three legislatures.
The election was one of the first items of business as Parliament formally reopened, marking the beginning of a new parliamentary term.
Meanwhile, former Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech is expected to be elected Deputy Speaker following his nomination by the Opposition.
