Balluta Bay has become the latest swimming zone to be closed after construction waste blocked a sewer line, causing sewage to overflow into the popular bathing area.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Environmental Health Directorate said swimming is currently “not recommended” due to a sewage overflow affecting the bay.
Authorities said the problem was traced to a blockage in a secondary sewer line caused by material that had been illegally dumped, including sizeable stone blocks and other construction waste.
Despite the issue being addressed, the bathing area will remain closed as a precaution until water quality testing confirms it is safe for the public to swim.
Warning signs have been installed around the site and will remain in place until the area is declared safe once again.
The closure follows similar incidents in recent weeks.
Last week, a swimming zone in Ta’ Xbiex was temporarily closed due to an overflow of foul water, while another warning was issued earlier this month for a bathing area in Birżebbuġa following a sewage outflow linked to nearby private residences.
Do you think enough is being done to tackle this issue?
