European Parliament President Roberta Metsola today welcomed Hungary’s newly elected Prime Minister Péter Magyar to the European Parliament in Brussels during his first European Council Summit since taking office last month.
The meeting marks a significant moment for Magyar, who only recently swapped his seat in the European Parliament for the top political job in Hungary after securing a historic election victory that ended the long rule of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Magyar is no stranger to the Parliament’s corridors. Until just a few weeks ago, he was serving as an MEP alongside Metsola before resigning his seat to become Hungary’s prime minister.
Sharing details of the meeting, Metsola said it was a pleasure to welcome her former colleague back to the institution in his new role.
The pair also discussed their shared priorities moving forward, with Metsola highlighting a common commitment to making people’s lives “easier, fairer, safer and more prosperous”.
Magyar’s appearance at the summit is his first as Hungary’s head of government and comes as European leaders gather to discuss some of the bloc’s biggest political and economic challenges.
For Metsola, it was also a reunion with a familiar face, albeit one who now sits at the European Council table rather than in the Parliament chamber.
