Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona will open a new store in Abrunheira, Sintra, on June 30, creating 64 permanent jobs as it continues its rapid expansion across Portugal.
The new supermarket will have a sales area of 1,900 square metres and will feature the chain’s full range of sections, including a butcher’s, fish counter, delicatessen, bakery and pastry shop, fruit and vegetable section, perfumery, household and pet care products, wine cellar and a ready-to-eat area offering self-service meals.
Mercadona said new job positions will be offered on permanent contracts from day one
Full-time employees working a 40-hour week will receive a starting gross annual salary of €15,293, rising to €20,915 through career progression. Mercadona also offers paid training, up to 29 days of annual leave and a performance-related bonus scheme.
The opening forms part of Mercadona’s ongoing investment in Portugal, where the retailer launched its first store in 2019.
Since then, the company has opened 72 supermarkets nationwide, with the Sintra outlet becoming its 73rd location.
Mercadona’s most recent opening took place in Covilhã in April, marking its first store in the district of Castelo Branco.
The retailer plans to expand further before the end of the year, entering three new districts — Vila Real, Beja and Faro — while also opening stores in Amarante, Esposende, Maia and Moita.
The expansion underlines Mercadona’s growing presence in Portugal, where it now employs thousands of people and continues to invest in new locations as part of its long-term strategy for the Portuguese market.
