
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reappointed lawyer and law professor Nesauro Firme as the Judicial and Bar Council’s (JBC) regular member representing the academe for a fresh four-year term.
Marcos will lead Firme’s oath-taking at Malacañang on Wednesday, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a briefing.
The president first appointed Firme to the JBC on July 11, 2022, replacing retired Supreme Court Justice Noel Tijam. Firme’s first term is set to expire on July 9, 2026, but with his reappointment, he will serve beyond Marcos’ term up to 2030.

Firme obtained his law degree from the Faculty of Civil Law of the University of Santo Tomas, where he is currently teaching.
He is also a faculty member of the Jose Rizal University Law School and formerly served as a faculty member of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Law.
He is also the author of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability and the 2024 book Comments on the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability with Latest Jurisprudence.
The JBC is a constitutionally created body that recommends to the president a shortlist of appointees for vacancies in the Supreme Court, other lower courts, the Legal Education Board, and the offices of the ombudsman, deputy ombudsman, and the special prosecutor.

It is composed of seven members, four of whom are regular members representing the Integrated Bar, the academe, the private sector, and retired members of the Supreme Court.
The three ex officio members are the justice secretary, a representative of Congress, and the chief justice, who also serves as the JBC’s ex officio chair. /mcm
