The jury in Yorgen Fenech’s murder trial questioned why only two police officers were sent to arrest former OPM chief of staff Keith Schembri in November 2019.
Assistant Police Commissioner Keith Arnaud told the court that investigators had been dealing with multiple developments that evening, with new information coming in between around 8:30pm and 10:45pm.
“The option we had was to go to sleep or continue through the night. We decided to work through the night to see where the information would take us,” Arnaud said.
He explained that after interviewing Adrian Vella, he and Inspector Kurt Zahra continued the investigation while the rest of the team went to rest.
“We decided to arrest Schembri and the reason only we went was because we kept going and the rest of the team went to rest,” he told jurors.
Jurors also questioned why Schembri’s office at Castille was not searched at the time.
Arnaud acknowledged that it could have been searched but confirmed that no search was carried out.
The testimony forms part of the ongoing trial by jury of Yorgen Fenech, who has pleaded not guilty to charges that he masterminded the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
