Jakarta (ANTARA) - The fire that burned approximately 15 hectares at the Jatiwaringin Landfill in Tangerang, Banten, has been fully extinguished, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said.
The Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, on Friday said the success was a result of the diligent and collaborative efforts of the joint emergency response team, since the fire was first reported on June 30 until Thursday evening (July 9).
"The main area of the Jatiwaringin Landfill, covering approximately 15 hectares, affected by the fire, has reportedly been 100 percent extinguished and is currently in the intensive cooling phase," Muhari confirmed.
According to Muhari, the fire in the main landfill area has been controlled, but the joint team remains vigilant for hotspots and light smoke in the adjacent waste disposal area.
"The joint team is still monitoring the hotspots and thin smoke detected in the waste disposal area outside the landfill near the lake," he added.
Regarding conditions on the ground, he informed that the situation in communities surrounding the landfill remains stable, with no residents displaced as everyone who had been evacuated has been able to return home.
He noted that the agency has deployed four water-bombing helicopters, which have dropped hundreds of thousands of liters of water to help extinguish the fire.
Three Mi-8AMT, Sikorsky UH60A, and Sikorsky UH60L helicopters are reportedly operating optimally in rotation over Tangerang, while one Mi-8 MSBT helicopter is undergoing technical repairs.
In addition to air operations, BNPB also distributed emergency ground logistics assistance in the form of 500 liters of fire extinguisher (Enviro Class A Foam), dozens of mini pumps, fire hoses, and portable radio communication devices (walkie-talkies).
As part of its support for affected communities and emergency responders, the agency distributed 100 food aid packages to residents and 150 pairs of operational boots to personnel involved in the firefighting effort.
"Emergency firefighting at the Jatiwaringin Landfill has reached 100 percent completion, and the social conditions in the surrounding community are reportedly conducive, with no evacuees currently displaced, as all residents have been facilitated to return to their homes," Muhari concluded.
