Security forces have rescued three kidnapped students of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, and one suspected kidnapper after a gun battle with their abductors in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
Troops of Operation Enduring Peace also rescued seven travellers abducted by kidnappers along a highway in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Police spokesperson in Edo State, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the students—Favour Okoroje, 21; Balogun Precious, 19; and Praise Obagbalu—were abducted on July 12 from Ujemen G.T. Extension, Ekpoma, and taken into the bush.
She said the joint security team traced the kidnappers to their hideout on July 14, where one suspect was killed and another arrested during an exchange of gunfire. The remaining suspects fled, abandoning their captives.
Ikoedem said a 300-level AAU student, Peter Ekpen Adolor, 24, was shot dead while trying to open the gate of the students’ residence during the abduction. She added that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.
In Plateau State, troops of Operation Enduring Peace rescued seven travellers abducted along the Riyom highway after responding to a distress call on Monday night.
The operation’s spokesperson, Capt. Polycarp Oteh said troops found an abandoned Opel Vectra near Sopp village and launched a search that led to a confrontation with the kidnappers, who fled into the bush.
The rescued victims, travelling from Akwanga in Nasarawa State to Jos, were freed unharmed. Troops have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
