Malta’s next parliament will include a profession that has never before been represented in the House of Representatives.
Andrew Agius has been elected as an MP for the Seventh District in today’s PN casual election, becoming the first veterinarian ever to serve in Malta’s parliament.
Agius, who works as a vet, secured his seat during the latest electoral count and described the moment as an emotional one.
“I’m extremely proud to be the first vet in Malta’s parliament,” he said shortly after his election, adding that he was so excited that “his legs are shaking”.
The newly elected MP is the son of former PN parliamentary secretary Francis Agius, but his election also marks a milestone for Malta’s veterinary profession, which will now have direct representation in the country’s highest legislative institution for the first time.
Veterinarians play a key role in public health, animal welfare, food safety and agriculture, making Agius’ entry into parliament a notable first for the sector.
As celebrations continue, one thing is already certain: Malta’s parliament is about to get its first-ever vet.
